110-Year-Old Houston Woman Credits Longevity to Faith in God

Hitting a century is a rare phenomenon, especially when the average life expectancy for an American woman was considered to be around 54 years when she was born. Elizabeth Francis was born in 1909 in Louisiana. When she was born, Cadillac joined General Motors, the NAACP was formed, and the Oval Office was built.

On Saturday, Houstonians celebrated her 110th birthday. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner paid Francis a visit to wish her on her birthday.

For a 110-year-old woman, Francis has her memory and is still very sharp. She is relatively healthy for an old woman who has seen six generations of change. Her family is grateful for her beautiful smile, her wisdom, and the wonderful stories she shares. Francis’ granddaughter Ethel Harrison feels that Francis’ birthday is very special as she has been able to watch and see all her grandchildren grow up. She was a part of their lives for a long time.

Francis was very happy to be among her family on her birthday. She got emotional when she talked about her family and friends who had come to celebrate with her, her life and longevity. Francis said that her life was a blessing from the Lord. She said that the Lord was the one keeping her alive and well. She credits her faith for the long life that she is blessed with.
