A baby girl was born with an unfortunate
and extremely rare condition. The condition will make her life extremely difficult and painful. It’s called Harlequin Ichthyosis, and Harper Foy of Washington is the youngest person with a confirmed case in the world. The genetic condition causes her skin to grow 10 times faster than normal.
Doctors did not believe that the child would survive for a year, but she has defied all the odds to make it to her first birthday. However, her life has numerous difficulties. She nees her skin to be constantly hydrated in order to keep her alive. When they delivered her, doctors had never seen such a condition.
They warned her parents that she was unlikely to survive. While she was still in the womb, Harper’s skin tissue built up, stopping circulation to her hands and feet. She was rushed to the IC unit, and unfortunately she lost the tips on four of fingers. After a month in the hospital fighting infection, she was able to go home with her parents.
Although there is no cure for the condition, if she treats her skin every day and soaks in a bathtub, she will be able to live a fairly normal life. ‘It’s a miracle she’s alive. We had no idea she had the condition until she was born, we were so shocked.
‘When she was born she didn’t look like a human, she looked like an alien. It was very traumatic.’
Her mother is asking for prayers!
